Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

If someone bought something for you and is making payments on their credit card for the item, can they demand you pay them or call the police to remove the item from you?? It is a family dispute and now my sister is claiming she never bought the item for me and I need to pay or she will call the police and have them take it from me.

The police may consider this a civil matter and require your sister sue you in court.

If she lies and tells them a story that amounts to theft or greater, they may come to your house to investigate the matter.

However, police are so unpredictable, I cannot guarantee that they will not take the item. In that case, you can sue her in civil court for the value of the "gift." Under New York law, you cannot revoke a gift.
