Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

Filling out forms by your self.

Hello,

Is it really recommended and necessary to get a lawyer

to fill out forms for Green Card, or can you do it your

self, and go to the interview for Green Card without a

lawyer - is that foolish?

Re: Filling out forms by your self.

In NY, if you don't file the forms correctly with the proper documents, the examiners usually will just deny the case. Since it takes 2 year to get an interview, I think it is foolish to prepare forms when you may not completely understand the instructions and go to the interview without a lawyer. The contact reps at BCIS are not helpful and more often than not give out incorrect information. It is not that simple even for an attorney. A lot would have to depend on your educational background, how good you are with forms, how much time you are willing to spend, and if there are any wrinkles to you case.

Re: Filling out forms by your self.

It is up to you. Many people do very well on their own. On the other hand, the waiting time is very long for an interview.

Re: Filling out forms by your self.

In my opinion, it is foolish not to have an experienced attorney handling your case. Think of it this way, is it really worth risking your citizenship (which is priceless) for a couple hundred dollars?

Please call my office at 718-888-3108 if you wish to schedule a consultation.

Very truly yours,

Neil E. Colmenares, Esq.
