Legal Question in Insurance Law in New York

Health Insurance question...Catch 22?

I am a self employed individual who has applied for insurance and was notified I am approved just to send in the payment. However the letter stated that the coverage would start on July 1st.

If I send in payment(which from what I see from the date on their reply will take only 2 days to get to them) and I then become diagnosed with something before July 1st could they claim it as a pre existing condition?

I NEED to see a specialist and receive a test. The test I'd pay for myself no biggy they don't have to pay, but then would they not have to cover the treatment of this illness for a year?

There is no way anybody could afford to cover the expenses of treatment(if it's the worst case scenario) unless they're a millionaire and hospitals are only required to handle emergency services for free right?

Should I wait out the 3 more weeks or risk it and get the test anyway? It's a catch 22 because I NEED the insurance to cover what would be huge medical bills.

Re: Health Insurance question...Catch 22?

It would seem that you have already completed an application and been accepted if you know the coverage will commence on July 1, 2005. In order to get the coverage in effect you MUST pay.

If they have already ackowledged the coverge, it should not be viewed as pre-existing.
