Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I am a bookkeeper in NYC. My client wants to pay a retail shop girl as a freelancer. I have advised my client that this is not legal, as the shop girl fits the criteria of an employee not an independent contractor. Am I liable? if I am doing the books and therefore would have to classify transaction paying the employee as a freelancer under "independent contractor" in our books and further would not be paying payroll taxes. Thank you, I am very concerned.
