Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

My mom has been in the same job for 17 years as a nurse at Clifton Springs Hospital. She has been an amazing nurse and has never had any problems until a year or so ago when a new supervisor was brought in. She has made my mom's life miserable and it has affected her to the point that she hasn't wanted to go to work. All of a sudden she has been written up for things that occurred on weekends she wasn't even working and was written up for things that she didn't do and was never notified that she was supposed to do. She has felt for a long time that her job has been in jeopardy and this supervisor has had it in for her. She even went so far as to contact human resources to express her frustrations but was fired as of today. They have been very vague in their reasoning and tell her that she can either resign or they will let her go. She mentioned to me that in the last couple conversations she's had with workers there they have asked her how long she's been there or commenting and saying that she's been employed for quite a long time. My dad thinks it might be age discrimination (she isn't quite at retirement age but is fairly close to it) and she thinks it's because she has built up so much pay they just don't want to pay her anymore.
