Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

property question

about 2 years ago I bought a home in MY name and my mothers name, my boyfriend at the time moved in with me at the same time I did. He helped pay for my mortgage and other living expenses. He also helped pay for central air condition to be installed but the contract was in my name and I signed every check. He did help with some home improvements but I never asked him to. He moved out in January and is now saying he wants to take me to court to get back his ''investment''. I never had a contract with him, we never married, and we only lived together a year. what are my rights? I live in NY Erie county. Does he have a case or he just scaring me. He says he talked to his attorney and it would be in our best interest to settle out of court. any help would be great

Re: property question

Do not sign anything before consulting (in person) with an attorney. If his name is not on the deed and you are not married, then he has no automatic entitlement to the house. He may be entitled to recoup the money that he used to improve the house - if in fact that's what happened. He has to prove that you guys had an agreement that he would get reimbursed for the money he put into the house.
