If you're an independent contractor and you were working for a company, the agreement that you signed with them would control the outcome. I think you are hung up with the fact that you dropped the computer notebook. If you are truly an independent contractor and are negligent causing damager to another individual's property, you would be responsible. So, if you were working and negligently did not close a window before a rainstorm causing water damage to electronics, you would be responsible. If you dropped the computer notebook because you negligently failed to hold the notebook, you would be responsible.
