Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I was online checking to see what my school taxes were going to be (not posted yet), and I started nosing around the website and if it is correct the former owners of my house still owe school taxes from 2007. I just purchased this home August 28, 2008. If these records are correct what should I do?

Typically, when purchasing a new home, the bank requires title insurance (this is recommended even if you do not finance through a bank), and the attorney who represented you at closing would have taken care of this. The title closer typically makes sure to collect any taxes that are due (contact your attorney to make sure this was done). Adjustments are made for the period of time between due dates for the taxes. If the outstanding taxes were collected at the closing, it is possible (although unlikely) that it hasn't been recorded yet. The county clerk's office would have records of any taxes which are outstanding for more than a year.
