Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in New York

Sexual harrasment at work place

Me and my girlfriend work together at a print shop in the east village area of NYC. Recently she told me that she was grabbed by the owners father in a sexual manner. She is fearful of reporting this to the authority, she is afraid of losing her job. Even though at the time this happened it was on my day off, I have seen the owner's father make inappropriate comments towards her, in addition the shop has a history of sexual harrassment with other employees from the same man, plus there are video cameras in our office. I want to report this but due to the fact that I am not the victem here I don't know what to do. My girlfriend is hasistent to report it, as for me it has become difficult to come to work because I have to restrain myself whene ever I see both the owner or his father.

Is there any legal advice that I can recieve from this?

Thank you

Jose

Re: Sexual harrasment at work place

It sounds like a testy situation and you and your girlfriend have to decide if you should report it. If you do, any retaliation by the owners results in a cause of action under the applicable discrimination laws.

I would be willing to discuss this further if you would like to contact me. Please let me know if I can help.

Kind regards,

Peter Moulinos

Yes. Regardless of your friend, you can report this because independently of your friend this has created a hostile work environment for you as well.

You can report to the State Division of Human Rights, or since this is within the City (NYC) you could report to the NY City Human Rights Commission. Or both. They both have web sites and telephone numbers. And they investigate for the EEOC as well.

If you and your friend are seeking an attorney, I practice in this field.
