Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

I own my home and my neighbor ons hers. At times we get an influx of people who do not live on our dead end block. We have, for years, agreed in parking in front of whomever is in the driveway as long as we can get out. I received a note on my car today asking me not to park like this. I had already verified with my neighbor that she wasn't leaving while I was home. My neighbor said the person was quiet because she was sitting on her porch and did not see them and said she knew nothing about it. This prompted my curiosity as to whether we have been breaking a law. In a phone call to several different officers only the last one said it was illegal, all others said no, it depends and only if there is a complaint. Is this in fact illegal? We own the driveway and we agreed to this.

I depends on the local enforcement of the law. Yes, blocking an active driveway is a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. It is not usually enforced in a quite residential neighborhood but if a complaint is made to a law enforcement agency in your area, they can ticket you. This is a simple parking violation and not a violation that can effect your license.
