Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Finding out details of Grandmother's will (she is deceased).

My grandmother died in 1987, her will was most likely filed in Suffolk County, New York. I have been told by my mother that my grandmother left me and my siblings some money. According to my mother, the money is in some sort of trust and that my grandfather has been living off the interest. My mother and her siblings were probably not named as beneficiaries in the will since it was their step-mother. I am concerned that any money earmarked for us might be "stolen" by my mom and her sisters. Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the will to see the details of her estate? We were minor children when the will was written and at the time of my grandmother's death; all are now over 25.

grandmother's will

Probate is generally filed in the county where the dead person lived a the time of their death.

It might also be filed where that person owned real estate, if it is in another state.

Check any county probate court that fits those descriptions.

However, if the trust was set up during her life time, it might not be under the jurisdiction of any probate court, and there may beno public record of it. That may be the way she wanted it, also.

Regards,

Alan

Probate will are public records

If her will was probated, the will is now public record. Her estate should have beenprobated where she was domiciled. Therefore, you should contact the Family andSurrogate Court in Suffolk County, NY for information.
