Legal Question in Workers Comp in New York

NY workers' compensation law

I was employed by NYSDOCS. I was injured on the job due to my facility's gross negligence. I requested over the course of a year that they remedy a safety hazard they created on the housing unit I worked on which jeopardizied not only me but the 42 convicts I was responsible for. All of this is documented and easyto prove. Am I allowed to sue my employer(NYSDOCS) because they were grossly negligent, or is workers comp my only remedy. As a result of my injury I lost my job.
