Legal Question in Bankruptcy in North Carolina

I am about to file for bankruptcy. I have a whole life policy with some cash value. The beneficiary is my ex-husband. I understand you can keep it safe if your dependent child or spouse is the beneficiary. Since this is my ex that means it's not protected, right? If not, can I just change it to my dependent kids or is there some look back period?

Consult with a bankruptcy attorney. When you hire one, he/she will advise you as how to handle this anyway.
