Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina

check

I received a check in the mail they said it was payment to be a secret shopper. check amount is $3000 I spend $265 at a store named on the enclosed information they pay me $500 I send the rest back to moneygram. Is this legit sound like a scam to me. they received my address from a survey I was taking online.

The fact that you have to send money back to them makes it seem like a complete scam. I would avoid this.
