Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina

My wife's father recently passed away. He had been making payments at a local business to purchase a motorcycle as a gift, and had told a nephew that it was completely paid off a few weeks before he died. He said he needed to arrange to pick it up. Unfortunately he did not tell anyone where he had arranged this purchase. My mother in law has called every motorcycle seller within a hundred miles of their home, and none of these businesses admit to having a motorcycle purchased by the deceased. We're stumped. It's possible that he may have lied about this, but he had no history of lying about such purchases. Is there a way to use a legal action to find out if any of the local businesses have it? So far, we have found no papers that identify the seller, but it will take a very long time to sort through all of the papers he left. Many of his have been water damaged as well.

Unfortunately there is no legal process to determine where the sale may have occured. You need to find the documents to get some clue as to where he may have gone.
