You mean you co-signed for someone. That is bad. Never co-sign for anyone, not even your mother. You co-signed, I do not think there is any requirement that the landlord get our consent before renewing the lease. To protect your credit, you will have to pay the landlord and as part of the deal, see if the landlord will take any derogatory information off your credit. Then arrange to get repaid by your friend. However, your friend sounds like a deadbeat because he/she needed a co-signer to begin with and probably does not have anything anyway and will move on to his/her next victim.

You can try disputing with the landlord because of lack of consent but I don't know if this is going to go anywhere. You need to read the lease carefully to see what it said about renewal. You may be obligated. There is a chance that you might not, but it is slim. You need to read the lease.

Ms. Hunter is correct. The lease probably said in the renewal terms that your consent was not required to renew. Notice of the renewal was also probably not required to be sent separately to you, Notice of the default was also probably not required to be sent separately to you. You need to make a deal with the collection agency and see if they will remove the derogatory remark from your credit report.
