Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I am a defendant in a custody case that is being held in another state. The type of hearing is special relief. The father is trying to get full custody of our son who he has had not contact with in months and is trying to say I am keeping him from our son but I have not. He is also saying he fears for our sons life because I am a psychotic who said our son was dead. I never said he was dead I did say that after months of no contact that I felt it would be better for him to stay away. Also our son has ADHD and is seeing a child psychologist and if he were to live with his dad he has already stated he would take him off him meds because ADHD is not real. Another fact my sons father's wife went to jail for 32 days for child abuse and neglect. They also both lost their kids together and one of hers. They got their kid back a year later but she never got her other kid back. Do I need to hire someone and do I need to be there it's 9hrs away

1 Answer from Attorneys

Yes, you need an attorney and yes, you likely will need to appear at the hearing. If you can not afford an attorney you need to at least be at the hearing or you risk losing custody.
