Legal Question in Civil Litigation in North Carolina

I loaned an ex-boyfriend 2,800 and had him sign a promissory note stating payment was to be made in full by Sept 1, 2016. He doesn't not want to repay me. As I understand, wages can not be garnished in the state of NC with a court order and on top of it he is an independent contractor. Is it worth pursuing this in court?

If he has assets beyond what would be exempt in bankruptcy, then it may be worth pursuing. Getting the judgment likely won't be the problem it will be collecting the judgment. However, if you get the judgment and know what you are doing, you can potentially make it so that paying you becomes a more attractive option to him than dealing with defending against your collection efforts.
