filing responsed without a attorney

i have been named the defendant in a cival action to collect unpaid medical bills. i am required to answer the complaint but do not know the proper form to file and do not feel the need to go out and hire an attorney. or do i need to file? will there still be a date that i can appear if i dont file a response

You must file an answer or a default judgment will be taken against you. Examples of forms are available at your local law library.

If you do not do anything judgment will be obtained against you. At the very least you have to file a general denial with the court.
