Can your wages be garnished without notification to you?

Yes, sometimes your wages may be garnished without notification to you. Your employer's payroll department will receive a notice prior to the garnishment, and they should inform you -- however they don't always provide that convenience.

The only thing that can stop a wage garnishment is filing bankruptcy or quitting your job.

The only notification that is required is the "Notice of Action to Collect Debt" form, which only has to be mailed to the debtor's last known address 15 days before the garnishment filing. It is not required that you actually receive it.
