Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Ohio

If my daughter died in a house fire and the owner (her landlord ) did not have home owners insurance is he liable for any expenses for example her funeral? The house did not have smoke alarms and the fire was from a grease fire while she was sleeping.

I'm sorry for your families loss. Whether the landlord had insurance has no bearing on his liability and responsibility. If your daughters death was at all caused by the landlords negligence in maintaining the property you would have a wrongful death claim against him. Insurance makes it easier to collect on a judgement but you should still get that judgement against him if the evidence supports it. Once you get a judgement you can attach his bank accounts, foreclose on his properties etc...Damages would include funeral expenses.
