deceased relative and unpaid property taxes

My husband's sister passed leaving behind a grown daughter,slow mentally,no job and very little education.My husband is the next of kin.She left behind about 3,000 dollars in unpaid property taxes and no will,she passed in August of 06,The city just advertise the lien today in the newspaper....What is my husband's next move and what is his right?

As your husband's sister has a daughter and left no will, her daughter is her sole beneficiary. Your husband has no rights or responsibilities regarding his sister's estate.

If his niece is incompetent, he can ask to be appointed her guardian for her protection. Also, even though he is not a beneficiary, he can apply to serve as Adninistrator of his sister's estate.
