Legal Question in Traffic Law in Ohio

I live in ohio and got pulled over for not wearing a helmet on my motorcycle. I have my license but in ohio you have to be endorsed for a year. The cop called for a tow truck and said he was impounding my bike. I told him I lived less than a quarter mile fom where I was pulled over and asked if I could run home and grab my helmet and ride it home. He said I was not allowed. I guess it wouldn't be a huge deal if the towing service didn't cost me $250 for les than a half mile tow and 12 hours in the impound lot. I thought this was extremely excessive for no helmet. My court date is in a week and was wondering if I should say anything or just take it and pay the fines. Thank you

If you had been able to run home and get your helmet before the tow truck arrived, you would have avoided the tow. I would mention that to the court only for purposes of asking for a lower fine.
