Passenger in auto

I was a passenger in a friends car, we stopped at a local conven store, friend went in store to get smokes, I waited in the car, i never got out of the car, a few minutes went buy when the man in the car next to us said i dinged his door, I told man I never got out of the car, now I am getting sued for $912.36, how can I be sued, I was just the passenger, who never got out of the car, he said I needed to turn it in to my insurance company, he never said or tried to sue my friend who owns the car, What can I do?

If the man wants to sue you, he will have to prove that you actually opened your door and hit his car door.

As far as your insurance, since you were the passenger in non-moving car, I do not know if your insurance policy would cover this occurrence.

It sounds to me like the man is just trying to get some easy money and is hoping that he can get your insurance company to settle and give him money. My suggestion, based on what you have stated, is to make notes of everything that was said and happened so you have documentation for later on and then just wait and see if he decides to sue you. Unless it was major damage, a ding in a car door is probably not worth the court filing fee let alone trying to pursue the claim. If he does bring suit, then you should speak with an attorney who can recommend further action.
