Depending on what assets your mother left, you may or may not need to start a probate. Probate is used to pay the decedent's bills and then transfer the remaining assets to the heirs. If your mother did not leave a will and was not married at the time of her death, then her children would be her heirs. If you are her only child, then you would be the only heir.

As the only heir, you would be the logical person to start the probate. We regularly assist heirs in determining whether to start a probate and work with them to complete one if necessary.
