Legal Question in Technology Law in Pennsylvania

Possible identity theft

My daughter recently moved out of the home that her fiance and she were sharing. She went and got another cell phone and new number a few days later. She only had the phone a couple of days when the ex-boyfriend started calling her. He was never given the number and her father and I were the only other ones who had it. We are pretty sure that he called the cellular company and used her personal information to gain access to her account. We are wondering if that was illegal on his behalf. And if he had another female call and impersonate my daughter to get that information, could that person also be breaking the law? And also, he somehow got into her e-mail accounts and changed her passwords so she can't even access her own accounts. Is there anything we can do about that?

Re: Possible identity theft

Good questions. Yes, you need to deal with the situation head-on and immediately. Based just on what you have stated the finace has crossed a line that puts him in jeopardy for both civil and criminal charges. The question is what to do?

First off your daughter must change access parameters for all her accounts, from credit cards to telephone, to email. Credit and bank accounts should be changed out completely. Also, the three consu,er reporting agencies should be contacted and told to put a "fraud watch alert" on her records and that all requests must be verified.

She should also consider filing civil charges (suing him) to stop him from what he is doing and enjoin him from further action.

And the final step is she should speak with a local police agency to find out what criminal charges can be brought.

I know this sounds like overkill but this is a slippery slope and stopping a perpetrator and preventing further damage is much more important than being nice to a former love.

I would be happy to help with this matter. Please contact me and I can speak with you about the service I can provide.
