Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

My father in law commited suicide 3 years ago. At that time we lived in FL. We were willed his house in PA. We did a short sale on our house in FL now we are being sued by the credit union that held our second mortgage. We make very little money. They say we owe $30,000! What do we do?

I am not sure what your question is - am I to assume that you inherited the PA house, left Florida and moved to PA and now live in father-in-law's home?

The answer, if you are married, is it depends. It depends on who is being sued (you, your spouse or both). it depends on your/your spouse's age, assets, debts and circumstances. Maybe you file for bankruptcy. Maybe you do nothing. Or maybe you resolve the debt at some point.

Are you being sued in FL or PA?

If FL, then you need a FL attorney. If you are interested in resolving the debt, I have a colleague in the Miami area that does both foreclosure defense and debt resolution and she has a statewide practice. If you are being sued in PA, then I may be able to assist in reviewing your situation and resolving the debt at some point in a non-bankruptcy, not-litigation context. If you are interested in either option, you can contact me at [email protected]. If you want to file bankruptcy, then you will probably want to discuss your situation with local bankruptcy counsel. There are many attorneys listed at Law Guru.
