Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Entitled to Child Support?

My daughter is 9 years old and has never met her biological father. I have never asked him for anything. I am now having financial difficulties and would like to try and receive some support. Am I able to after 9 years? How would I begin to do this?

Re: Entitled to Child Support?

Your child may be entitled to support payments.

A custodial parent may seek support payments from a non-custodial parent at any time. There are precedential parameters that govern the type, amount and limits of any support orders (including possible lookback periods).

You will need an attorney to pursue support. The most efficient means for a person with very tight finances is to see a family law clinic in your local area. You can often find then at a local law school, or with community organizations. Your local bar association can also recommend sources for you to obtain quality low or no-cost legal services, such as through a possible pro bono appointment or volunteer.

Be aware, that you may have to establish paternity and also may be called on to share custody with the father. There is also the concern that if there are over-riding concerns of care custody could be sought by the father. Do not be afraid to pursue this course but make certain your house is in order as you do.

Good luck and regards,
