Legal Question in Insurance Law in Pennsylvania

''No insurance''

My husband is self-employed and currently has no medical insurance on himself. If he ever accumulated a large number of medical bills that he could not afford to pay, could I be held responsible and could our house be taken from us? (It is in both of our names). I have insurance for myself and I am wondering if I should add him to it.

Thank you.

If you have access to insurance for your husband you probably should use it. The main problem nowadays is that uninsured patients pay the maximum price for medical care. For example an MRI might have a list price of $1,000 but the insurance company contracts with the providers at $500. While the debt could not force the sale of the home a judgment could be entered and a lien placed on the home until it is sold.

Attach your husband immediately, I'm shocked to hear you never did this initially. Even though they cannot "take your house," bill collectors can make your life a living hell, try to avoid this situation as quickly as possible.

Also check with the hospital to determine if charity care is available?

My office also offers flat rate pricing and free consultations, for additional information please visit my firm's website at www.AlleghenyAttorneys.com or by calling my office at 412.731.0865.
