Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania

Residence

I work for a borough in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. The borough requires that we live in the borough as part of contract to work. I would like to know if the borough can make you live in the borough to retain my job. Is it legal? The police dept. doesn't have to.They can live 5 miles ,as the bird flies, from the borough lines. They threaten to fire anyone would moves out of the borough. We are a union shop and our contract is up in 07.

Re: Residence

Unfortunately, a municipal employer can enforce such a requirement. You may wish to raise the issue with your union to see if they can get you relief. Otherwise you will need to wait to see if the next contract has a similar provision.
