Legal Question in Immigration Law in South Carolina

my wife is a British citizen and currently lives in England. In a few months, she and her minor son will be coming to the US, but only for one year and then we will all be moving to another country when I retire. My question is, is there a way for her and her son to stay here without having to go through the I-485 process which is quite expensive, and unnecessary as they will only be here for one year.

Thanks,

She can't stay in the United State for one year on a visa waiver. She needs a long-term visa or a green card.

If she comes to USA as a visa waiver visitor from UK, she'll be allowed to stay only up to 3 months and can't extend her stay. If she overstays, she will never be able to travel to USA as a visa waiver visitor again.
