Can Little League Baseball patent the words ''Little League''

Our youth football league recieved a letter from the Little

League Baseball saying we could not use the words ''little league'' in the name of our football league. Our organization

has been incorperated snce 1979,and have used the same name

since then. My question is can Little League Baseball stop us from using the words ''little league in our name.

Perhaps. Each case is different. If Little League baseball is serious about this and if you want to protect your name, you need to see an intellectual property attorney. There are many arguments for and against your position depending on how you have used the name and whether Little League Baseball knew or should have known you were using the name.

It may be that this can be protected, but probably not. A quick review of the trademark office information shows that there are at least 15 registered instances of the use of the phrase "little league" in connection with various athletic events.

If Little League Baseball is serious about pursuing this matter and your league is equally serious about continuing to use the name, you would be well-advised to retain the services of an intellectual property attorney. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
