A dispute with a contractor would involve breach of contract, which is a subject in which all lawyers should have a good amount of knowledge. Generally, the subject matter of the contract would determine what, if any, experience or specializations would be beneficial for a potential counsel to possess.

If, as I suspect, the contract involves the contstruction or remodeling of real estate, then an attorney who has real estate experience and litigation experience would be suitable. If, on the other hand, it was a temp worker whom you contracted with in the setting of an office, then a lawyer with experience with employment and labor law would be beneficial.

If your dipute involves a real estate contractor, then you should not delay in seeking counsel, as both witnesses and evidence (in particular physical evidence) are both essential in obtaining a settlement or prevailing in a suit for your damages and both witnesses and evidence will likely become less credible and harder to obtain the more time passes.

Additionally, there are statutes which limit the time after a claim accrues within which you are allowed to file suit. After the statute of limitation applicable to your cause of action expires, your claim will be barred from court and worthless. Generally, a breach of contract case, would have a 4 year statue of limitations, but depending on the circumstances, there may be other avenues of recovery which could have a much smaller window of opportunity in order to pursue.
