I fired my lawyer how soon must he/she have to report it to the courts

If there is no lawsuit pending, never. If there is a lawsuit pending, your attorney continues as your attorney of record until the court releases him. He can do this on his own or you can hire a new lawyer who can file a motion for substitution of counsel.
