Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

Can I be legally charged for replacing the carpet for entire apartment when I did not damage the entire apartment? I moved out of an apartment, there was a small stain on the carpet and now the landlord is charging me to replace the carpet for the entire apartment. They kept my deposit, the carpet was very old shag carpet, it would not even come clean with a rug doctor. What would be the best way to handle this?

Hopefully you took photos of the carpet. You can file a petition in JP court to contest the cost of the entire apartment, and urge the court that only the cost of the single room should be assessed. You can also argue that the landlord is entitled to only the depreciated cost of the carpet.
