Loss of Livestock

On a recent deer hunting trip, I accidently shot and killed a young cow/calf. We contacted the Rancher, and he wants $650 for his loss. How can I find out whether the Incorporated Ranch carries insurance for these type of mishaps, and is this a fair price for the animal?
