For estates of less than $500,000, which is better - a will or a trust?

Since the estate is well below the threshhold for the payment of estate taxes, it all depends upon what you wish to accomplish. The cost of setting up a trust, administration, and taxation may well exceed the cost of a will and subsequent probate in Texas, if cost is your only consideration. Trusts and wills are no more than tools for estate planning, and which tool is the better is strictly a function of what it is you want to do.

Your question is a little like asking whether a HumVee or Audi Quatro is better to get you where you're going. That's a fair question if you know

where, the terrain, what you're carrying, etc.
