Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

My sons friend is charged with street robbery with a gun. He has no record and was only giving his room mate a ride and unaware he had a gun. The other kid had about 5 charges because he was home when cops raided house. My sons friend was staying with his girlfriend in another town. The girl they "robbed" is a known criminal and drug addict/dealer in our small town. His public defender wants him to take a plea and admit guilt when he really is NOT. No proof but the two other criminals word against him. I think he needs a new attorney. He is in jail and clueless as never been. I have known this boy for about 5 yrs and he's no criminal.
