Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My boyfriend and I live in Virginia. He has two children with his ex-wife: a 15 year old son who was thrown out of his mom's house 15 months ago and has lived with us ever since with no communication with his mom and a 10 year old daughter who lives with her mom and visits us every other weekend and every other week in the summer. Prior to his son coming to live with us, my boyfriend had gotten a little behind on his child support. (about $2,000). My question is can we receive child support from his ex for his son that we have full-time? He has not paid child support for his daughter since this happened due to thinking it was 'even'. I have encouraged him to take care of this thru the court system but he is afraid to 'rattle the cage' because he owes from that past debt to her. thank you!

That past debt is just going to grow if he does not take action to get the support modified, and the modification can only be retroactive to the date of filing, so time is of the essence.
