Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Personal property and two dogs being held by my ex-partner

I left the house I was living with my ex-partner on April 28th, 2007; I came back several times with the truck to move my property. He was fine with it until May 6th, he changed the lock and held my property and dogs without my consent.

I have around $5000.00 in furnishings and I have the paperwork for both of my dogs. I went to the house once, and he (his sister who is manipulating the situation) called the police for trespassing.

What are my options when I have proof of ownership?

Thanks.

File in the general district court in the jurisdiction where the property is located what's called a Warrant in Detinue, requesting the return of your property, or, in the alternative, that the court enter a judgment against the wrongful distrainer for its fair market value.
