Legal Question in Immigration Law in Virginia

What type of Visa is needed?

Do I need to take up citizenship in order to sponsor my mother and step-father

who wish to retire here. They would be self supportive through their UK pension

and have no need to work. Is there another visa they could apply for without

going through the citizenship route. I have a permanate residencey status.

Thank for for your time.

Re: What type of Visa is needed?

Only US citizen can sponsor parents' permanent residence in the US. If you don't apply for citizenship, your parents can come to US as a visitor for short period of stay.

Re: What type of Visa is needed?

I disagree with attorney Wang's answer that only a U.S. citizen may sponsor a family member for permanent residency status. One who has only permanent residency status(green card holder) is also entitled to file an I-130 Petition For Alien Relative and there is no need for such a person to be actively pursuing citizenship status in order to do this.

See USCIS website for verification.
