Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

I just recently put in an offer on a property that was listed for over a year for 155,900 and the offer was accepted and signed by all parties. A week later the seller notified my realtor that the house became a short sale and now the sellers' realtor says they won't accept anything less than 189,200. Is this possible to renege on the initial contract and not grant us the agreeable offer?

Without reviewing the terms of this "initial contract" as well as proof of the alleged "short sale",

I couldn't offer an opinion on this issue.
