Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Termination of a lease

I am on a one year lease. I have been in the same place for 5 1/2 years. I am a professional in higher education. I recently accepted a position in Maryland. My landlord said that I could break the lease but I am still liable for the other months of rent if the place is not rented. Does Virginia law provide for the termination of lease due to career, job or professional reasons without being held financially responsible for the broken lease.

Re: Termination of a lease

Unfortunately, Virginia law does not provide for such a defense. You are fortunate to have a landlord who will work with you rather than push you for the whole ball of wax.
