Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

Boat Storage

I sent my boat to a local repair shop. It was later learned that the cost to repair the boat exceeds it's value. I told the mechanic to stop the repairs and bill for the work completed to date. When I received his invoice, the storage charges are more than 5 times what other storage locations in this area typically charge. I want to pay the mechanic for his work to date and reasonable storage fees. He will not accept my offers and will not release my boat until I pay his full invoice. Does he have the right to keep my boat?

Re: Boat Storage

You should review the statute on mechanic's liens found in Title 60 of the revised code of Washington.

The repair shop may well be entitled to be paid and may well have the right to a lien on your boat until the bill is paid.

His storage charges may well be higher if he has other uses for his property.

You might want to talk to an attorney about resolving this. Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
