Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

I received a citation for not transferring title within 45 days. I went to court and it was strongly suggested everyone should lawyer up. I said yes I could afford my own. I was under the impression that I would be asked if I wanted to talk to prosecuting attorney to see what he was going to recommend to judge. Is that just when the court appoints you a lawyer. My lawyer will charge me $500 and the fine at the most is $1000, so can I just not lawyer up and admit my guilt (albeit I do have an explantion or excuse) and "throw myself on the mercy of the court"!

Well, you don't have to use a lawyer on a criminal case. And yes, the prosecutor can talk to you directly as long as you have not hired a lawyer, or asked for one to be appointed,

Given the type of charge it is, I imagine there is some kind of resolution available that does not involve you pleading guilty. If you can't get an offer like that from the prosecutor, then the $500 is probably worth it, if the lawyer can keep the case off your criminal record.
