Can I give up legal rights to my son? He is two and we live in Washington state. His mother is soon to be married and I haven't seen my son for over a year.

While you can give up your rights, such as the right to visitation, you cannot be freed of your obligations to support your son unless his new step-father agrees to adopt him. Agreed step-parent adoptions are generally easy to do if there is genuine agreement. If you are interested in pursuing this option, tell your son's mother and see if she will hire counsel to initiate the process.

You should also consult local counsel before signing off on everything so that you truly understand what it means to give up all rights to your son. If you change your mind down the road, it will be nearly impossible to do anything about it.
