RCW 11.88.020 provides that the general qualifications of a guardian include:

Any suitable person over the age of eighteen years, or any parent under the age of eighteen years may, if not otherwise disqualified, be appointed guardian.

In all cases the court must find that the person to be appointed as guardian is not disqualified (usually refers to incompetency or moral inadequacy).
