Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

Retention Bonus vs. Sign-on Bonus

Please Advise:

I am a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

I was offered a 1 year Retention Bonus-half paid after six months, the remainder after 1 year. I received the scheduled 6 month payment. Since then the medical practice I was hired to work for has discontinued Nuclear Medicine services. I was 'let-go'. The remainder of the 'retention-bonus' is being denied based on the fact I was not empolyed with the company for the remaining 6 months. I have a co-worker who received a sign-on bonus= half of total amount paid after 6 months, remainder was to be paid after a year. His year anniversary would have been in July 2005. He is receiving his remaining amount based on the 'diction' of ''sign-on bonus'' rather than'' retention bonus''. I would have been eligible at the end of March 2005 for 1 year retention money. My co-worker started in July 2004. I have been employed since 08/28/2003.

We both are being 'let-go'.

He was paid a far greater amount of money than myself for his sign-on.

Please Help!

Thank you,
