Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

I work for a company that has recently made its employees sign a contract stating that if they have worked here less than 1 year - they'll have to pay $1000 to the company. Our wages are about $13-15/hr so that would be about a month of work. Furthermore, when one employee refused to sign - he was told he might not get his benefits.
