How Many Serious Injuries Are There Each Year?

By | November 18, 2016

From car accidents to injuries caused by medical malpractice, serious injuries affect the lives of millions of Americans every year. In Florida alone, statistics show that there have been over 173,000 injuries of various kinds so far in 2016.

If you have suffered a serious injury in Florida, you need personal injury lawyers known for getting exceptional results for their clients and get the compensation they deserve.

Serious Injuries by the Numbers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 31 million Americans suffer an unintentional injury every year, and 2 million people suffer injuries bad enough to require hospitalization. Tragically, over 160,000 injuries are fatal.

Traffic Accidents. Sadly, traffic accidents account for many of these injuries. There are about 6 million traffic accidents in the U.S. annually, from minor fender benders to catastrophic collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 3 million people are hurt in traffic crashes each year, and over 5,000 people are killed in motor vehicle collisions. Although many factors are responsible for auto crashes, distracted driving is a serious and growing problem. Any time a motorist’s attention is pulled away from the road — whether to glance at a text or eat a burger — the risk of a serious accident increases.

Real Property Accidents. Slips and falls, injuries caused by negligent security, and other injuries that occur on a person’s property account for over 400,000 personal injuries in the country each year. Research shows that people injured in real property and premises liability accidents have a lower chance of recovering compensation for their injuries compared to individuals hurt in auto accidents. The Bureau of Justice Statistics released data showing that car accident injury plaintiffs are successful at trial 61 percent of the time. By contrast, people injured in property-related accidents win their cases less than 40 percent of the time.

Medical Malpractice. Medical mistakes are now the third leading cause of death in the United States. Unfortunately, comparatively few victims of medical malpractice get the legal help they need to bring a successful claim. For many patients, getting a physician to acknowledge a mistake is nearly impossible, and many patients are told that they are imagining things, or that what they are feeling is normal. To add insult to injury, medical malpractice plaintiffs have dismally low victory rates at trial. When victims of medical malpractice file a lawsuit, their rate of success is lower than 20 percent.

These low trial success rates highlight why it is so important to work with an experienced personal injury lawyer.
